Brad's favourite part of our whole entire world trip has been our Amazon tour in Brazil.
As it turns out, Brad has secretly been carrying around a little 'souvenir' from his time in the Amazon. You see, he had a little sore on his shoulder that looked quite red and inflamed. It just wouldn't heal!
So we went to see the pharmacist and bought some anti biotics to treat the infection. 4 weeks later, the wound still hadn't healed and we were beginning to worry about it.
We decided to see a doctor the next day and enjoy the rest of the day relaxing at our hostel. There we were, sipping on a beer, relaxing in the sun... I could see Brad scratching his shoulder and told him to stop playing with it.
"That's probably how it got infected in the first place," I added for good measure. I continued to read my book until I heard Brad's most alarmed voice yelling,
"Kath! Get over here! Something weird is happening!"
Indeed, something very, very weird was happening. Something was making an exit from its cosy bed in Brad's shoulder.
As Brad gently squeezed, I gently pulled the thing out with some tweezers. And like a new born baby (or a scene from alien), Barry the baby bot fly made his way into the world.
Initial research into the identification of Barry resulted in us thinking he was in fact a screw fly - Barry's evil older cousin. The screw fly is apparently treated with vaseline and a slab of bacon on the outside of the wound to lure it out (according to Dr. Google).
Before I ran down to the butcher for some bacon, we decided to show Barry to a doctor who correctly identified him as a harmless bot fly.
I am happy to report that Brad has recovered quite well, although continues to scratch the site (much to my frustration). Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Barry the Baby Bot Fly. RIP buddy...
Not for the squeamish, here is something similar to what we experienced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcuyYhCTDMo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
