¡Bienvenidos a España!

Off to Spain Loz and I flew, with 1 day in Barcelona and 3 days in Sevilla. There we met up with 3 more aussie travelers; Tamara, Larissa and Sinead! As we took wayyyy too many photos, I will let them tell most of the story.

Warning: there are a ridiculous amount of photos in this blog.

3 more Aussies (and a selfie stick) in the mix...

We blitzed Barcelona, visiting all of the places we wanted to in just under 4 hours before relaxing at a bar for the rest of the afternoon.

From Barca, we caught the train to Sevilla with only a brief moment of panic when the lady told us our tickets had been cancelled 15 minutes before we were meant to be boarding... All was fine though and we ran to the platform all dramatic-like with only a few moments to spare before boarding.

That familiar summer heat greeted us once again, but it didn't stop us from hitting the streets to check out this beautiful city!

One night we went to a local Flamenco show, where we certainly enjoyed the sangria and crowd heckling (at each other), but were a bit miffed when the infamous red lady never turned up!!!

We did make friends with a salsa-dancing Venezuelan that night though, so all hope was not lost. With Francisco, we all went along to a little bar with standing room only and danced the night away to J-Lo.

When it came to closing time, the owner shut the doors and windows and continued service until the wee hours.

We never found her!
....Sar did though...

What an amazing 5 days with a great group of girls, we had an absolute ball and found ourselves in tears with laughter most days. It certainly was the icing on the cake for my 30th birthday week - with more to come if you can believe it!

Loz and I said our goodbyes to the girls as they continued their European adventure and off we scooted to Gran Canaria.

Introducing Loz to my BFF in Gran Canaria

I had the opportunity to show Loz around our home and the weather was perfect. It was brilliant! We went to the beach, drank cava and gin, went to the mountains (where we learnt it is important to work out how to engage reverse BEFORE you leave the car rental place) and just hung out which was superb!

We even "ducked" over to Tenerife on the ferry to check out Gran Canaria's toughest competition. And I have to say, I was VERY impressed with this island.

We hired a car and checked out the markets in the capital before heading to the mountains down south and the towering Teide Volcano (the highest mountain in Spain).

Things got a bit cheeky in Tenerife...
Breakfast at our hotel in Tenerife

Down South, we took a spectacular star gazing tour; we sipped cava whilst watching the sunset behind Teide volcano and then had the chance to watch the stars and learn about the Northern Hemisphere constellations.

We hiked up Teide to check out the stunning views from above, it was a great little walk, even though we did cut it a bit fine and almost missed the last cable car back down to the car.

We were helping an older German couple who were trailing behind us (that's our excuse and we're sticking to it). The lady hadn't eaten anything other than an egg all day and wouldn't accept any water or food from us - she was not in a good way.

We all made it to the cable car in time. Well, just in time for us to remember how we hate enclosed spaces - especially on a 35 degree day stuck in a glass box with 25 other sweaty tourists.

Still fresh faced and eager
....Still having an absolute ball....

We weren't able to reach the top as we needed a permit to go any further, but we made it to 3555masl and were very happy with ourselves!

Made it to 3555masl

And thus concluded my prolonged 30th birthday celebrations. It was lovely to get an injection of love all the way from home, to see a bit more of Europe with Brad and friends and to show Loz around our new home. This is one birthday I will never, ever forget - that is for sure.

Thanks to Brad and everyone who made it so much fun!!!

All roads lead to Rome: Marathon Recap

Let me preface this by saying, before last year, I would never have considered myself a runner. And I still don't! As you know, I have had a lot of time on my hands over the past couple of years and decided to take up running as a "hobby". Yes, I know. This does not sound like the Kath you used to know. But alas, desperate times call for desperate measures. It was after signing up for a 10k at the beginning of 2016 while Brad was doing his marathon, that I realised event running is a LOT more fun than your average Monday night jog. And if the best part about running isn't that you can eat whatever the hell you like, then I don't know what is.  Brad smashes out the Gran Canaria Marathon, 2016 After a couple of half marathons (I know, right? Who even am I anymore?!?!) and another couple of 10ks, I thought, "bugger it. Why not give a marathon a crack?" Brad and I decided to choose a primo location for the marathon, so that we coul...

A bucket list reshuffle in the Arctic

Norway. November. Polar night. Why not?  We jumped on the plane after a whirlwind month of visitors whose names ALL began with J. I was tongue tied for an entire month. Special mention to Jojo, Judy, Joe and also my friend Julie who took us on an impromptu tour of the island. The weather was about -5 degrees celsius when we got off the plane in Oslo, extreme layering took place immediately, followed by a long silence between Brad, Jojo and I. I am pretty sure we were all thinking the same thing, "why on EARTH would we come to Norway in winter...by choice?!". ...No one said a word until we made it to the warmth of our airbnb... A day of museum visiting, reindeer meat sampling, Norwegian salmon eating, ridiculously expensive beer drinking and early sunset photography lay ahead of us. One visit to the Fram museum in Oslo and naturally, being an ENFP personality, I now want to become a polar explorer. Cute sled dogs, open seas, northern...

SOMOS DE PRIMERA!

First of all, there was the BIGGEST of BIG news on Gran Canaria this month! Well, apart from this of course: http://thecanarynews.com/bus-crashes-into-gran-canaria-airport/ In the middle of June, Michael and I were beginning to worry that civil war had broken out on the island, when all we could hear were loud explosions, screaming and car horns outside. The local Las Palmas "football" team has moved into the Spanish Football League's first division (La Liga) for the first time in 13 years after winning against Zaragoza 2-0 in Gran Canaria. This is a big win for Las Palmas, who came close last year but were disqualified thanks to some overly keen pitch invaders. As the professional bandwagon jumper that I am, I will be keeping a close (ish) eye on their progress. Check out the FEROCIOUS mascot for UD Las Palmas: (HAHAHAHAHA!) Somos de Primera! The team toured the city on buses signing autographs... Annnnyway, enough of this chit chat about "football".  We have b...
